DARK WATER (2002). Hideo (Ringu) Nakata's funeral-sombre take on the ghost story. A mother – recently separated from her mysoginist Sarariman husband – & daughter try to make a new life together in a flat with a particularly nasty case of damp. Despite the slim premise, this film conjures an atmosphere of breathless and inescapable dread that will stay with you for days. Riu Kanno is almost heartbreaking as the young mother, coming apart at the seams in what can only be termed a masterpiece of the genre.
