DANTON (1983). Along with Robespierre, Danton was one of the key member of the French Revolution, until, like most of his colleagues, he succumbed to the process he had initiated, and lost his head. Played by Depardieu, he represents the liberal, anarchic branch of the revolution while Robespierre is the thin-lipped bureaucrat, playing by the book, but with cruelty never far behind. An excellent film by Andrzej Wadja, one of the world’s great film directors. The parallels with the uprising in Poland at the time (1983) are deliberate.
