DANGEROUS LIAISONS (1988). Stephen Frears’ film was one of two adaptations of this scandalous 18th century book about the games of love and power. Fortunately for him, the other (Valmont by Milos Forman) fell by the wayside. Here we have John Malkovich and Glenn Close conspiring aginst the virtue of Michelle Pfeiffer, with Uma Thurman and Keanu Reeves looking very young in the background. The reason the film works is that it manages to capture the period while still feeling very modern, and it also has a heart. We care about the characters and what happens to them. Really worth watching.
