Date Night

You know what, this wasn't too bad. I was afraid it would it be a formulaic Hollywood comedy, and it is, but there are some laughs along the way.

Steve Carell and Tina Fey are a couple somewhat past their honeymoon days, with 2 children, the daily pressures of work and domestic detail, and not a lot of time to stop and smell each other's roses. They have a regular evening out together, when they go to the same restaurant and play the game of imaging what other couples are up to. But when they hear that their friends are splitting up, they decide to push the boat out and go for a slap up meal in Manhattan - which is where the problems start.

There are only two reasons to see this film, and they are called Steve and Tina. They are essentially souped-up TV stars, but they have the immense advantage of being likeable, and even, at a stretch, believably human. So while we have to endure a good deal of pointless and silly plot, concerning a corrupt DA, bent cops and a lot of chasing about (including an unfunny routine involving two cars wedged together), we also have the pleasure of watching two comedians having fun with being bumbling and inept in the kind of situation that they wouldn't normally encounter. It's not a comedy masterpiece, but I did laugh on more than three occasions, and these days, that's not too bad a return.
