3/10
Watching this dreadful vampire movie makes me realise (again) just how good Let The Right One In is. Daybreakers starts off with a mildly interesting premise. In a world set 10 years in the future, vampires are now in charge, they are the majority, and humans are either on the run or being farmed for their blood.
Trouble is, blood supplies are running low, there aren't enough humans and haemotologist Ethan Hawke is having trouble coming up with a blood substitute. But like so many premises, it has no follow through. Instead of an interesting perspective on this novel situation, we get car chases, shoot outs, heads ripped off, and blood everywhere (such a waste). Willem Dafoe turns up as a renegade who's managed to de-vampire himself accidentally, but we're no longer very interested in either plot or character, mainly because there's little sign of either. Sam Neill over-eggs his corporate villain, and despite chainsmoking and wearing a fedora, Hawke just looks far too young. Find something else to sink your teeth into.
