LE CERCLE ROUGE (1970). Jean-Pierre Melville is one of the greatest French directors of all time, but his reputation is still less than he deserves; this is a smooth and compulsive crime movie, with Alain Delon as a determined and skilful crook, who pits his wits against a cop. The plot is anything but original, but no one else has the cool of Melville.
