BRAZIL (1985). Terry Giliam’s output has been patchy, but this is definitely a winner. Set in an alternative future which looks as though it is based on WW2 technology, the film is a call for the subversion of authority, in the unlikely shape of meek clerk Jonathan Pryce who is unwillingly called upon to fight back against the all powerful bureaucracy that rules the world. This is what Blade Runner might have been like if it had a sense of humour and an ounce of imagination.
