LA BELLE ET LA BÊTE (1946). Or Beauty & The Beast to you. I can’t think of any other film that has transposed a fairy story onto film to such great effect (and that definitely includes Disney). Jean Cocteau has the imagination to create a world which is magical, scary and disturbing, with characters who fulfil their archetypal purpose yet are fresh and interesting. Not to be missed.
