THE BEACH (2000). A film that was dated almost before it was made. Alex Garland’s trendy novel about a backpacker in Thailand who gets into deep shit must have seemed like an ideal package for Danny Boyle, especially when they got di Caprio to star (offending Ewan McGregor in the process). But nothing works the way it should, and you’re better off sticking with the book.
