BATTLE OF ALGIERS (1966). Simply one of the greatest films of all time. Made in 1965 by Italian director Gillo Pontecorvo, it’s an account of the fight for independence between Algeria and France in the late 50s and early 60s. It looks and feels like a documentary, but isn’t. Although it was banned in France, it is surprisingly even handed. While it may not be a Friday night date movie, it is absolutely essential viewing if you want to know why cinema matters.
