BASQUIAT (1996). The first film from Julian Schnabel who made The Diving Bell & The Butterfly. It’s not as good, but it’s still well worth watching and has a cast to die for, including Jeffrey Wright as the eponymous Haitian artist whose overnight success went to his head. David Bowie is irresistible as Andy Warhol, and Gary Oldman reminds us what a good actor he is when he gets a halfway decent part. Benicio del Toro steals every scene he’s in, and look out for Dennis Hopper, Willem Dafoe and Christopher Walken. As good a film about the modern art world as I’ve seen.
