BARRY LYNDON (1975). Stanley Kubrick is one of the most overrated of modern directors, and this bloated and beautiful still life (based on Thackeray’s novel) is as dull as they come. Casting Ryan O’Neal in the title role was a fatal folly, and although we can admire the lighting and costumes, there’s not a lot else going on.
