THE BALLAD OF JACK & ROSE (2005). Although I imagine Daniel Day Lewis took the role of Jack because his wife (Rebecca Miller) directed the film, it’s actually a very good part. Jack is the last relic, along with his beautiful teenage daughter, of an idealistic community that has disintegrated. He is clearly a man coming to the end of his life, but his infuriating mixture of pigheadedness and sweetness make him a fascinating character. Also with the ever-wonderful Catherine Keener.
