ALIEN (1979). If I stand behind a door and shout boo as you come through, you will jump. You can’t help it. Most scary films rely on this tactic; I call them Boo Movies. Alien is the daddy of Boo Movies. Sure, it’s all beautifully designed, and has a good cast, but Ridley Scott is a director of limited imagination, and making us jump is not the same as creating genuine fear.
